Solar Tower Runs on Salt, Lots of It

SolarReserve.jpg

SolarReserve plans to build a power tower near Rice, CA, that will allow its plant to supply electricity for up to 100,000 homes through the use of molten salt. There will be a 12 ft. pedestal surrounded by 17,500 24 x 28 ft. heliostats. Above the tower, 4.4 million gallons of salt receives heat from the sun that has been reflected by the mirrors. After reaching 1,000ยบ F, energy is provided via a steam generator that uses synthetic oil. If all goes as planned, the tower should be built beginning in 2013.
