Power Flowers Artsy Wind Turbines

flowerpower.jpg

Pennsylvania Artist David Edwards has created 14 ft. tall sculptures with his inspiration coming from sunflower petals. The Power Flowers are wind turbines with solar panel-covered blades. The energy goes into both a built-in battery and LED bulbs, and can power up laptops, cell phones and other electronic devices. A 6 ft. replica was displayed at a recent EcoFest, a Fair in the Park in Shadyside and summer workshops from Pittsburgh's Parks and Recreation Department. Some of the smaller versions may be sold at a price of $8,000 - $10,000.

I have also been building flower style wind turbines.
I just installed a flower garden on the roof of a new children's hospital viewable from the waiting room (and at http://www.flickr.com/photos/khuntley/sets/72157624160665189/ )
The turbines generate power to light the sculpture at night while some power mechanical bugs that come to life when the wind blows. These 36 blade turbine rotors are inexpensive and will boost performance while improving the looks of existing propeller turbines by swapping the rotors.
