As another storm seems to be always brewing somewhere, make an effort to be better prepared even if you live elsewhere. One necessity is a portable lamp that can take you out of the dark like this Camping Lantern. The 8.5" tall lamp comes with a rechargeable solar battery that will give 10 hours of sunlight and 12 LEDs can be partially used for lower light. It also has an adjustable brightness for extending the light, can be hand-cranked in case of extended blackouts and yes, even when camping.

Danish artist Olafur Eliasson teamed with engineer/buddy Frederick Ottesen
and designed the Little Sun, a portable solar lamp that can last up to 3 years. When put in charging mode in the sun for five hours, it emits light for 5 hours nightly. This is such a deal if you consider that the solar lamp can save up to 90% on what they would spend on kerosene. Plans are already in the works to distribute in Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. Contact Olafur if you want more info on the Little Sun as they plan to produce 500,000 units during 2012, more than enough to equip a few large villages.

You would think that a Solar Flashlight would almost be an oxymoron, but this SolarLite holds a single charge for over 3 years. The 1W 2X LED has 11 years of burn time and 16 hours of light. Because this 2-pack comes fully charged, they can be kept in a drawer or glove compartment. The company promises that extreme temperatures will not affect operation and each 14 x 7 x 2" flashlight is both waterproof and floats.

One of the standouts of the last week's CES 2012 was the SolarKindle, winner of the Innovation Award. SolarFocus' flexible leather e-book cover has a solar panel built into the cover and a built-in LED reading lamp that is good for up to 50 hours after a full charge. It also features a dual-charging USB/solar battery that, under normal sunlight, will produce about 3 months of Kindle 4 usage when unplugged. When on the go, one hour of sun produces 3 days of reading.

While not strictly to tradition, (menorahs are used with fire as the source of light,) Woodstock, New York is once again making news as it becomes the home of the first solar menorah. Meant to raise awareness of Chanukah, Rabbi AB Itkin designed the candleholder from spare parts. It was on display in the city's Village Green for all eight nights where Rabbi Yitzchok Hecht declared, "the concept of taking the energy of the sun and using it to bring light into the darkness of night is a beautiful complement to the miracle and story of Chanukah."

Denver inventor Steve Katsaros has come up with a solar light bulb that he hopes will make a difference in third world countries. He also has a rather unique attitude towards the distribution of them. He has enlisted the aid of budding entrepreneurs that work in Kenya and Tanzania. Each receives a 'business in a box' that comes with 144 bulbs, displays and flyers. While most of his products have been sold to non-gov. organizations, he believes that in time a network of locals will work to make things easier on the distributors as well as the locals. Think of it as Mary Kay without the pink Caddy.
